Get Your Own e-Aadhaar Card Online

Around four years ago, the Indian government announced unique identification numbers or Aadhaar cards (like the social security number in the US) for every citizen, and launched several incentives for people with Aadhar cards. Soon, registering and obtaining a UID was on the agenda for almost everyone in the country. In fact, the decision to make it a mandatory document in government schemes, banks, schools, etc. fuelled the urgency.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the agency responsible for implementing the Aadhaar card, has several enrollment centres across the country. However, getting a card is quite troublesome as there are often long queues at almost all centres for just acquiring the initial forms. Once you fill the forms, you're assigned a date for enrolling for the Aadhaar card. This day can be within the next week or be months away depending on the number of people who applied before you did. You then have to go and submit the Aadhaar application form along with other required documents.

To avoid all the hassle and with a view to make it convenient for residents, the UIDAI has gone and made the process available online for select states. People residing in Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra can now book an appointment for the entire process of enrolling for the card online. Once the appointment is fixed, a slip will be generated with a token number and other details of the schedule. In case you cannot make it on the day of the appointment, UIDAI has also provided the facility to re-schedule or cancel the appointment. You can book an appointment by filling a form here (http://bit.ly/u8Fpbw), and re-schedule or cancel here (http://bit.ly/14drvZa).

Note that this is facility has been provided on a It is mandatory to undergo the usual process of getting your photograph clicked, fingers scanned and ensuring all your essential details are mentioned correctly. However, if you've already done all of this and haven't yet received your Aadhaar card, you can simply download it from the UIDAI website—provided you've managed to hold on to the acknowledgement receipt given at the enrollment centre. Moreover, the printed copy can be used as the "official card" without needing any authority's signature or stamp.

To download the Aadhaar card, you need to go to the e-Aadhaar website (http://bit.ly/18KRCI4) and feed in the EID number, date and time, along with your complete name and your area pin code. It will then walk you through a verification process and verify your mobile number. The last four digits of the registered mobile number will be displayed; if they are correct, click on "Yes", otherwise click "No". You will then be sent a one-time password (OTP). It is possible to change your mobile number if it is incorrect. In the next field, you have to enter the password to download the electronic version of your Aadhaar card.

POINTS TO NOTE
Before you start with the procedure to download the e-Aadhaar card, there are some important points to be noted. Firstly, the e-Aadhaar card that you download is password protected. The password for the file is your area's pin code. If you see the “validity unknown” icon on the e-Aadhaar card, you can follow the procedure we've outlined below:

Right click on the “validity unknown” icon and then click on “Validate Signature”
You will now see a signature validation status window. Click on “Signature Properties”
Under Signature Properties, click on “Show Certificate”
Verify that there is a certification path named “CCA India 2011”. This means CCA India is identified as the owner of the digital signature that has been used when signing the document
Mark the certification path named “CCA India 2011", then click the “Trust” tab followed by “Add to Trusted Identities”
Answer “Ok” to any security question that follows
Check the field for “Use this certificate as a trusted root” and click “OK” on both the current and the next window to close them
Click “Validate Signature'” to execute the validation
Also, once “CCA India 2011” is identified as a Trusted Identity, any subsequent documents with digital signatures from CCA will be validated automatically when opened
